ESO Strap Launches Left Handed Guitar Strap

$

Believe it or not, this is now a thing! We’ve got lefty guitar picks, so why not a left handed guitar strap? I was recently contacted by ESO Strap, who have come up with a unique and innovative guitar strap design – and it comes in both right and left handed versions!

The main departure from your traditional guitar strap is that the ESO Strap features a clever curved design which aims to avoid pressure points, resulting in a super comfortable wearing experience. This unique contoured design is why left and right handed versions are necessary.

ESO Strap Left Handed Guitar Strap

Aside from its curved shape, the ESO Strap also comprises a number of other innovative features such as a built in pick holder, and smooth-stop adjusters for super easy length alteration. Read more about the strap’s features and watch an in-depth video below to discover all of the features of this inventive new product.

ESO Strap Left Handed Guitar Straps

The newly released ESO Strap was designed to provide optimal weight distribution by avoiding the artist’s most undesirable pressure points, while accomplishing a truly unique and timeless aesthetic. This combined with its fluid motion pick pockets, which enable seamless replacement; bypassing any interruption to the music, make it truly one of a kind.

The ESO Strap is offered in both a left or right-handed version, acting as an expression of pure continuity between artist and creation.

  • Patent Pending – Contoured “S” shape avoids pressure points and never cuts into your neck.
  • Patent Pending – In-seam pick pockets enable you to seamlessly replace or store your collection.
  • Two smooth stop polymer adjustors to achieve the perfect length.
  • High density foam core for optimal comfort and minimal aesthetic.
  • Interior heavyweight backing designed for long term strength and flexibility.
  • Reinforced stitching on all critical points throughout strap.
  • 1 oz urethane DWR moisture coating to keep perspiration out.
  • Hand crafted Brazilian leather end pieces.

Reverend : Left Handed Guitars 2015

Reverend Guitars is an American guitar company, founded in 1996 by guitar and amp technician Joe Naylor.  The company is widely known for their unconventional construction methods and retro designs.

They may only offer two or three left handed Reverend guitars at a time, but we do get new models each year which is really nice to see and helps to keep things fresh. This year we’ve kept the Double Agent and Manta Ray HB from 2014, and also gained the beautifully colorful Jetstream 390.

Left Handed Reverend Guitars 2015

Left Handed Reverend Guitars 2015
From left to right: Double Agent, Manta Ray HB, Jetstream 390

Double Agent

Have you ever wanted the power and girth of a bridge humbucker, and the sweet/bluesy tone of a neck P-90 in one axe? Then this is your guitar. The two pickups complement each other perfectly, allowing you to switch seamlessly between two different tonal characters without losing volume or punch. And combined, they offer up a unique balls-meets-twang tone unlike anything else.

Left Handed Reverend Double Agent

  • BODY korina solidbody.NECK PROFILE medium oval.
  • NUT 1-11/16″ (43mm) width, graphite.
  • PICKUPS Special H bridge, CP90 neck.
  • FINGERBOARD rosewood or maple, 12″ radius.
  • CONTROLS volume, tone, bass contour, 3-way.
  • BRIDGE Wilkinson WVS50 IIK tremolo.
  • FRETS 22 medium jumbo.
  • STRINGS 10-46.
  • NECK maple, satin amber finish.
  • TRUSS ROD dual action, headstock access.
  • CASE S-Case (available separately).
  • SCALE 25-1/2″.
  • TUNERS Reverend pin-lock.

Manta Ray HB

Warm and lively, with the acoustic richness and overtones of a full size semi-hollow. Round enough for jazz, but this ray can sting too, with plenty of sustain and attack for rock and blues. The 1-3/4? thick body is slim and manageable and the flat top has a clean, fresh look. Solid wood construction is featured throughout, with no plywood. The back, sides and center block are produced from one slab of Korina which is routed from the top, and capped with a solid maple flat top. Excellent sustain and attack are coupled with substantial resonance, for a complex and responsive tone.

Left Handed Reverend Manta Ray

  • BODY semi-hollow korina, solid maple top.
  • NECK PROFILE medium oval.
  • NUT 1-11/16″ (43mm) width, graphite.
  • PICKUPS Special H bridge, Special H neck.

  • TRUSS ROD dual action, headstock access.
  • CASE Large Two-Toned Teardrop Case (available separately).
  • SCALE 24-3/4″.

Jetstream 390

An amazing guitar for both clean and distorted tones with enough twang for surf, but thick enough for rock.

What’s not to love about the Reverend website? Plenty of information, tons of high quality images, and most importantly – a clearly defined lefty section!  If you’re after a left handed Reverend guitar, it will be easy to find on their website. 13 EVIL Halloween Themed Guitars

$
0
0

With Halloween fast approaching I thought it would be a fun idea to take a look at some of the most ghastly, freakishly EVIL custom guitars out there.  Here are 13 of the most vile creations I could find…

Evil Guitars For Halloween

This list isn’t ranked by order of EVIL, but I’ve certainly left the most gruesome and disturbing of all til last.  You may want to steer clear of the end of page, because what appears there truly is the stuff of nightmares – evil incarnate some might say! Happy Halloween!

ESP LTD Devil Girl

This guitar was made in 2002 and features a plastic composite body in the shape of a female devil, complete with tail inlay. Only around 100 of these limited edition creations were produced.

ESP Ltd Devil Girl Guitar

Hutchinson Nurgle Guitar

James Hutchinson is a UK based artist who creates themed and highly stylised guitars. The inspiration for the Nurgle Les Paul came from the Warhammer 40,000 universe in which Nurgle is the God of death and decay. The guitar top is heavily corroded and eaten away by rust and worm holes.

Hutchinson Nurgle Steampunk Guitar

ODD ‘Spider’ 3D Printed Guitar

This guitar is a little different to the rest in that it features a 3D printed body! By utilising 3D printing technology ODD has managed to create a ridiculously intricate and complex design, featuring a spider web body complete with tiny spiders crawling around inside.

You can view more of ODD’s 3D printed guitars on their website.

ODD Spider 3D Printed Guitar

ESP Flaming Skull Guitar

Another ghastly guitar from ESP, this one being designed by the incredibly talented and absolute legend Jimmy DiResta. Looks like a great guitar for players who like to adopt a classical sitting position – that mouth seems like it would slot over your leg quite nicely!

ESP Flaming Skull Guitar Halloween

Ibanez Devil Mask J-Custom

This is a one of a kind Ibanez J-Custom, hand carved in Japan in 1998 for a guitar gallery in Orlando, Florida.  This was on sale for a cool $5000 and you can see why when you look at the detail involved in the carving of this guitar.

Photos were hard to come by, but fortunately there’s a great video of it on YouTube.  As you can see from the video you can look straight through the mouth of the carving, sort of like an evil version of Steve Vai’s monkeygrip! \m/

Schecter Custom Shop Coffin Guitar

This is a 2009 USA Custom Shop offering from Schecter.  Doesn’t come cheap though – this airbrushed masterpiece would have set you back a cool $5000 😉

Schecter Custom Coffin Skull Guitar

ESP Shinigami ‘God of Death’ Guitar

This work of art is a special creation by ESP Master Luthier Masao Ohmuro. It depicts a Shinigami (God of Death) slashing his scythe through the body of the guitar.

You can view more of Masao’s unbelievable work here.

Hembry Dragon Guitar

Is it a dragon, a demon, or is it the devil?  Whatever it is, it’s pretty scary looking!  For added bad-assery the eyes also light up! Check out more crazy evil designs at Hembry Guitars

Hembry Carved Devil Guitar

George Lynch Custom Skull & Bones Guitar

This guitar was hand-carved for George Lynch by famous Hollywood horror movie make-up artist Johnny Frog.  It was made in conjunction with Ed Roman Guitars.

George Lynch Skull Bones Guitar Halloween Frog

Lieber Guitars Gigerstein Guitar

This guitar was commissioned by Chris Stein of Blondie and is based on the works of H.R. Giger – who you will probably know for his work in the movie ‘Alien’.  The bio-mechanical body design is hand carved in wood and is adorned with carbon graphite, assorted biological materials and bronze castings. Lieber Guitars

With this guitar being so utterly badass you’d think there would be some high quality photos of it – unfortunately not :(

Lieber Guitars Gigerstein Halloween

Custom Paintjob

Of course, if these outrageous guitars are little OTT for you, then you could consider getting a more straightforward custom paint job by your friendly neighbourhood artist.  Or failing that why not try a stock guitar with a crazy finish like this ESP Ltd Dan Jacobs signature DJ600?

ESP Ltd Dan Jacobs signature DJ600 Blood Guitar

Or how about Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and his famous signature Karloff the Mummy ESP?

Kirk also owns a few other guitars with similar horror themed finishes, be sure to check out his famous Ouija Board ESP and the less publicly seen Red Frankenstein ESP!

Ibanez has just announced two new left handed RGs for the USA market! Keep reading to find out more about the RG652KFXL Prestige and the RG721RWL Premium!

It’s worth noting that these guitars are only on the USA Ibanez website for the moment, so they could very well be exclusive to that region. However, the RG721RWL has previously been on sale in Europe and certain other regions, so those not in the States may still be able to get their hands on one (most likely used).

Ibanez RG652KFXL Prestige Left Handed Guitar

We haven’t seen a left handed Prestige from Ibanez for quite some time, so it’s nice to finally see one back in the range. The new RG652KFXL features the usual basswood body with a beautiful Australian Blackwood top and matching headstock veneer. It will definitely be available from our friends over at Xtreme Lefty Guitars in Florida.

The Best Left Handed Guitar Demo Ever?

Alright, maybe not the BEST left handed guitar demo video. It’ll be sure to give you a good giggle though…

Ola Englund – all around metal guitar legend, and author of the best selling book ‘Chugging For Dummies‘, has just released a new video in which he demonstrates the left handed Washburn Solar 160 from his signature range.

One slight problem though. Ola isn’t left handed…

Ola has a wicked sense of humor – well played sir! I laughed, and cringed…a lot. Can’t quite make out the sweet solo he rips out after Nirvana though… 😉

For those not in the know, the Solar Series is Ola’s signature line of guitars.  Although the 7-string lefty model he talks about in the video doesn’t seem to be listed on the Washburn site at present. Get it sorted Washburn!

Skervesen : Left Handed Guitars & Basses

$

Skervesen is a popular and relatively new custom guitar brand, based in Poland. They offer a wide variety of different guitars ranging from traditional 6-strings all the way up to 10+ string fanned fret monsters!

But what about left handed Skeversen guitars? The great news is that the entire range is available to order left handed at no additional charge. That’s what I like to see!

Skervesen Left Handed Guitars

Left Handed Skervesen Guitars

The image above shows a small selection of the entire range of left handed guitars available at Skervesen. They’re all stunning, right?

As the company is a custom guitar brand you can obviously order any of these guitars in any number of different variations. For example, you can combine any body and headstock combo, choose the number of strings, scale length (including multi-scale!), pick the woods and finish colors. Build your dream axe!

The base price for each model includes hard case, full overall setup, matching headstock, locking tuners, Jescar stainless frets (each manually shaped and polished), Luminlay fluorescent side dots. Finish: acrylic satin (even in high gloss option back and sides are always satin). Binding: ivoroid, black, white, pearl, natural wood, purfling (where possible). Set of Bare Knuckle pickups especially hand made for your build (lifetime warranty), copper-shielded cavity, hand made ebony truss rod cover and ebony headstock strings’ damper.

Skervesen Left Handed Basses

Skervesen Left Handed Bass Guitars

Again, the image above shows a small sample of what is available at Skervesen. Check out the website below to explore all available options.

If you fancy owning your own Skervesen, simply fill in an order form on the website to begin the process. A 40% deposit is required to start your guitar, and build time is roughly 6-7 months at the time of writing.

Skervesen Website

As soon as you hit the Skervesen website you are greeted with an incredible image of the brand logo alongside a bad-ass mechanical creature that looks like it has just crawled out of the Matrix. Clearly this is a company that puts a lot of effort into their branding!

The guitars are all displayed clearly, and with plenty of high quality images showing them off in their best light. Incidentally, I recommend following Skervesen on their Facebook page for daily updates on their latest builds.

Left handed models aren’t displayed, however a section on their FAQ page addresses left handed availability.

Strandberg Boden OS First Left Handed Run

$

It has been a long time since I was really ‘wowed’ by a new guitar, but a few weeks ago we became a Strandberg dealer at work

A few days after our first stock arrived I left the office and headed into the guitar store to check out some new Jacksons that had just arrived. Then something else caught my eye – a group of stunning Strandberg Boden OS fanned frets. I was already excited when I first heard we were getting them in, but after seeing them in the flesh it was love at first sight.

Strandberg Boden OS Righties

I picked one up and was instantly floored over how lightweight the guitar was.  Seriously, they weigh pretty much nothing. And the special Endur-Neck neck profile is truly something else! I’m well aware that the design isn’t for everyone, but these guitars really impressed me (as well as most everyone else at work!).

Naturally I was frustrated that these new production models weren’t available left handed. But today I got some good news…

Strandberg Boden OS Left Handed Guitars

The super exciting news is that Strandberg is trying to put together an initial run of left handed Boden OS guitars. And we get to choose what they make!

If you have any interest in being one of the first to get your hands on one, Strandberg has created a Facebook Group where you can discuss and vote on your preferred specs. For those without Facebook, you can find the voting form here. Although it looks as if you’ll need a Facebook account to keep on to date on the progress of these as the group is private.

Strandberg Boden OS Left Handed Guitars
The image above shows a few example specifications – see the form above for a full list of options

Available choices include:

  1. Number of Strings (6, 7 or 8)
  2. Pickup Brand
  3. Body Color
  4. Fretboard Wood

Once the voting is over, Strandberg will move to produce the top voted specifications. After the specs are finalised, at least 20 people will have to put down a deposit for the guitars to be made. Full terms and conditions are available on the Facebook Group page.

I’m excited – hope you are too! Here’s a great video review of the 7-string model which explains more about the guitars in detail.

Washburn Guitars was founded in 1883 in Chicago, Illinois by George Washburn Lyon. The company is best known for its guitars, however they also produce banjos, mandolins, amps and various accessories.

Did you know? Washburn introduced what is thought to be the world’s first dreadnought acoustic guitar – the Lakeside Jumbo –  in 1912!

Left Handed Washburn Guitars

Washburn Left Handed Guitars

The range of left handed guitars available from Washburn is fairly small when you consider the size of the company, but there’s some really great models on offer! Almost all of the guitars available are from the Parallaxe Series, which means that the left handed range is going to mostly appeal to rock and metal players.

We also get a couple of handsome acoustics, but unfortunately no basses at present.

I’ve displayed all of the guitars below with a few key specifications – visit the Washburn website for full details. The guitars are listed in the order that they appear in the image above.

Is This The First EVER Left Handed Fender Telecaster?

$
0
0

Could this guitar be the first ever left handed Fender Telecaster to be made?

I’ll admit than i’m not too knowledgeable when it comes to vintage guitars, but musical instrument expert appraiser Lawrence Cavalieri certainly seems to think so.

The First Ever Left Handed Telecaster

The video below shows a recent episode of the Antique’s Roadshow in which a gentleman brings along his father’s left handed Tele for an appraisal.  The owner believed the guitar to be a 1956 or ’57 model, but it turns out it was actually made in 1951 and could potentially be the first ever left handed Telecaster!

The Price is Right?

Before you watch the video, why not have a guess at what you think this piece of history might be worth.  FYI – the guitar is all original, missing the selector switch tip, and pretty well worn. It looks as though the original case may have gone A.W.O.L as well. What do you think?

Here’s the video – see how well you fared. Interesting viewing for all guitar enthusiasts!

How did you do? Is it crazy that I thought it would be worth more? I wonder what it would fetch if the guitar was in better condition!

Music Man Guitars is one of the world’s best known manufacturers of high quality guitars and basses.  The company is a division of the Ernie Ball corporation and all of the guitars are made in San Luis Obisbo in California, USA.

Left handed Music Man guitars come with a number of configurable options.  For example you can choose from a variety of different finishes, and have your headstock match the body finish color or keep it natural.  The Petrucci models have the option of a piezo bridge and special inlays, and the Silhouette models also have choices on which material your pickguard is made out of. Check out the Music Man website to see the full range of available options.

So, whats the story with left handed Music Man guitars and basses? In total Music Man make 12 of their current range as a left handed option, which is a damn sight better than most of the other big manufacturers.  Let’s take a look…

Left Handed Music Man Guitars

Left Handed Music Man Guitars

From left to right: Luke, Axis SuperSport, John Petrucci 6, John Petrucci 6 BFR, Jogn Petrucci 7, John Petrucci 7 BFR, Silhouette Special

Luke Steve Lukather Signature Model
The Music Man Luke Steve Lukather Signature Model combines hot electronics, a sleek body, and an oil-finished maple neck with a prominent V-profile. The electronics are active (with an easy-access battery compartment) and employ an active EMG model 85 humbucker in the bridge position, and 2 EMG SLV custom single coils forward. 5-way selector gives instant access to a palette of tones. Hardware includes a MusicMan vintage tremolo and Schaller M6-IND locking tuners that ensure accurate tuning and intonation. Includes hardshell case.

Axis Super Sport
Combines the classic book-matched figured maple top, cream binding, and features of Music Man’s Axis with the string-thru-body bridge and 5-way switching of the Music Man Axis Sport. Available as either a double Dimarzio humbucker option or as a double MM90 ‘soapbar’ style configuration.

John Petrucci 6
The Music Man John Petrucci 6-String Electric Guitar has a maple neck featuring an adjustable truss rod and 5-bolt mounting to the basswood body for perfect alignment and no slipping. A sculpted neck joint allows free access to upper frets. The Petrucci 6 guitar’s rosewood fretboard has 24 wide, high-profile frets. Schaller locking tuners and custom John Petrucci tremolo complete the hardware. 2 Custom DiMarzio humbucking pickups were specially designed for Petrucci. Piezo bridge option adds bright, natural string vibration tones to the mix. 3-way selector has a custom center-position configuration.

John Petrucci 6 BFR
The Ball Family Reserve John Petrucci 6 Electric Guitar was designed in conjunction with the world-renowned Dream Theater guitarist. The signature Music Man guitar features fine tonewoods including alder and mahogany. A mahogany tone block runs from under the bridge to the neck pocket. Full mahogany neck. The Petrucci electric guitar’s high gloss polyester finish looks great and offers superb protection. Equipped with redesigned controls providing additional versatility and tonal options, the signature John Petrucci 6 sets the standard for the next generation of electric guitar innovation.

John Petrucci  7
Same as the Pectrucci 6 string above but with 7 strings

John Petrucci 7 BFR
Same as the Petrucci BFR 6 string above but with 7 strings

Silhouette Special
Same cool Silhouette shape and features, except this version comes equipped with a Music Man vintage tremolo, a 3-pickup array in an H-S-S or S-S-S configuration, and featuring the patented Music Man “Silent Circuit” that reduces hum while retaining a true single-coil sound. The graphite acrylic resin-coated body cavity and aluminum-lined pickguard provide electronic shielding to block noise and hum from external electrical sources.

Left Handed Music Man Bass Guitars

Left Handed Music Man Bass GuitarsFrom left to right: Bongo, Bongo 5, Stingray 4, Stingray 5, Sterling

StringRay 4
Combining tone, looks, functionality, feel and loads of character, the Music Man StingRay took the bass world by storm in its debut in 1976. Since then it has remained one of the most popular instruments amongst professional bassists, and for good reason. Featuring that signature massive humbucking pickup, 3 band active EQ, select maple neck, 6 bolt neck attachment, and Schaller tuners, the current day StingRay is a prime example of what a bass should be.

StringRay 5
5-string version of the Stingray, see above for information.

Sterling
The Music Man Sterling 4-String Bass has a similar shape to the StingRay, but is shorter and narrower, while the neck remains basically the same (34″ scale, 11″ radius). It also features hot-rodded electronics: active 3-band preamp, a Music Man humbucker with hum-cancelling phantom coil, and unique 3-way switching (both coils in series mode, single coil, and both coils in parallel mode).

Bongo 4
Selected basswood is carved into THE most distinctive body style ever—very well balanced and responsive with a super-tight 5-bolt joint to a selected maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. Dual neodymium humbuckers with 4-band EQ on 2 concentric knobs and continuous balance provide huge tone with precision command. Schaller BM tuners with tapered string posts, easily accessible truss rod, matching headstock, and a graphite acrylic resin-coated body cavity for supreme noise shielding add up to true Music Man luxury.

Bongo 5
5-string version of Bongo, see above for information.

Music Man Website

The Music Man website is well designed and contains every detail under the sun regarding their guitars.  Unfortunately there isn’t an option to browse by dexterity, but this isn’t much of a problem here as the Music Man range is kept to a few high quality guitars rather than hundreds of variable quality models.  Check out the spec list on each guitar’s information page to find out which are available to order left handed.

With Fender having recently unveiled their one-of-a-kind, million dollar ‘Pine Cone’ Stratocaster, I got thinking… What is the most expensive guitar ever sold? Just how much exactly would someone be willing to pay for a piece of music history?

Well it took quite a bit of digging, but here’s what I‘ve managed to track down. Because I know you like pretty pictures, I’ve made a nice little infographic of the top ten valuable guitars for you to share. You’ll find a list of the full 30 guitars at the bottom of the page, with a little bit of background information on each model.

In this graphic I’ve detailed the value of each guitar, the previous owner(s), and just for fun…how many super-cars you could buy instead.

10 Most Expensive Guitars Ever Sold Infographic

30 Most Valuable Guitars In The World

1 Fender ‘Reach out to Asia’ Stratocaster – $2.7 million
The most expensive guitar ever to appear at auction, the ‘Reach out to Asia’ Fender Stratocaster was sold in order to raise money to help the victims of the 2004 tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean. The Strat was signed by 19 world famous rock stars, including Bryan Adams who was the initial brains behind the project.

2 Gibson 1962 J-160E (John Lennon) – $2.4 million
This acoustic was one of a pair of identical guitars purchased at the same time by John Lennon and George Harrison in 1962. The guitar was previously thought lost after it went missing during a Beatles gig in 1963. 3 Fender 1968 Stratocaster (Jimi Hendrix) – $2 million
The second highest priced guitar previously owned by a recording artist is a 1968 Fender Stratocaster, famously played at the world renowned 1969 Woodstock Festival by Jimi Hendrix.Purchased in 1998 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

5 Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard (Keith Richards) – $1 million
The 1959 Les Paul Standard is commonly referred to as being the ‘holy grail’ of electric guitars.  This instrument was traded in to a London guitar store where it later found its way into the hands of a certain Mr. Keith Richards. Reportedly sold to a private collector for $1 million.

6 Fender 1964 Stratocaster (Bob Dylan) – $965,000
This 1964 Fender Stratocaster was played by Bob Dylan at his first ever electric gig at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. After accidentally being left in the back of a plane, the guitar spent 40 years untouched in a loft until it was rediscovered by a television history show in 2012. Sold December 2013.

7 Fender ‘Blackie’ Stratocaster (Eric Clapton) – $959,500
In 1970 Eric Clapton purchased six 1950s Stratocasters and gave one to each of Pete Towshend, George Harrison and bandmate Steve Winwood. He then chose the best pieces of the remaining three guitars and used them to build ‘Blackie’. Clapton used ‘Blackie’ almost exclusively until 1985 when it was retired due to issues with the neck. Sold June 2004.

8 Doug Irwin Tiger (Jerry Garcia) – $957’500
Jerry Garcia’s will stated that upon his death all of his Irwin designed guitars should be returned to luthier Doug Irwin. After a lengthy legal battle with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead it was agreed that Irwin should receive only two guitars – Tiger and Wolf.  Tiger sold for $850,000 at auction (or $957,500 if you include the buyer’s premium). At the time, this was the highest price ever paid for a guitar at auction. Sold May 2002.

9 Gibson 1964 ES335 TDC (Eric Clapton) – $847,500
The second guitar ever purchased by Eric Clapton is also the second Clapton guitar to appear in this list.Played for a brief stint during 1964 but then more or less retired. Sold June 2004.

10 Martin 1939 000-42 Acoustic  (Eric Clapton) – $791,500

11 Doug Irwin “Wolf” (Jerry Garcia) – $789,500
In 1972 after purchasing a guitar made for Alembic by luthier Doug Irwin, Jerry Garcia commissioned Irwin to build another instrument for him. ‘Wolf’ was the resulting guitar. One of the only guitars in this list not previously owned by a legendary player.  This Explorer was purchased as a gift in 1963 for the princely sum of $247.50, and amazingly, was virtually untouched until it was eventually sold in 2006. Because Gibson only produced 100 of these original Explorers it sold for an unbelievable $611,000 at an auction house in Boston, USA. Sold October 2006.

16 Fender 1965 Stratocaster (Jimi Hendrix) – $570,000
This 1965 Fender Stratocaster was famously set on fire with lighter fluid by Jimi Hendrix whilst on stage in 1967.  Purchased by guitar collector Daniel Boucher. Sold September 2008.

18 Martin OM-45 Deluxe (Roy Rogers) – $554,500
This 1930 Martin OM-45 Deluxe was previously owned by American singer and actor Roy Rogers. The guitar far surpassed its initial estimate of $150’000-$250’000 and ended up selling for over half a million dollars! Sold April 2009.

19 Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins Hollowbody (John Lennon) – $530,000
The most recent addition to this list is another Beatles classic.  This stunning Gretsch 6120 was used by John Lennon during the recording of the album ‘Paperback Writer’. The guitar was purchased by current Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay in March 2015.

20 Fender ‘Brownie’ 1956 Stratocaster (Eric Clapton) – $497,500
‘Brownie’ is a 1956 Fender Stratocaster, used by Eric Clapton throughout the early 1970s, most notably with his band Derek and the Dominos. After 1970 ‘Brownie’ became Clapton’s back-up guitar after he sourced and fell in love with number 6 in this list – ‘Blackie’. Sold June 1999.

21 Fender 1964 Mustang (Jimi Hendrix) – $490,000
Another guitar on the list formerly owned by Jimi Hendrix is this Dakota Red 1966 Fender Mustang. Used during the recording of albums such as ‘Axis Bold as Love’ and ‘Electric Ladyland’. Sold April 2007.

22 Maton 1963 Mastersound (George Harrison) – $485,000
George Harrison played this guitar during the summer of 1963 while his Gretsch Country Gentleman was being repaired. Sold by a British private collector in May 2015 for a cool $490k.

23 Fender 1996 Gold Leaf Stratocaster (Eric Clapton) – $455,550
This one-off, 23 carat gold plated Fender Stratocaster was custom built for Eric Clapton in 1996. The guitar was used during Clapton’s Far-East tour in 1997, as well as throughout various concerts in Europe. Sold June 2004.

24 Fender 1968 Rosewood Telecaster (George Harrison)- $434,750
George Harrison was presented with this guitar by Fender in December 1968. The Telecaster was played by Harrison in the last ever live performance by the Beatles, on top of the Apple building in London. It featured in the 1970 Beatles movie ‘Let It Be’ and is played on various parts pf ‘Abbey Road’. Sold September 2003.

25 Vox 1966 Kensingtom (Lennon/Harrison) – $418,000
This quirky prototype Vox was made for John Lennon in 1966 and played by both Lennon and George Harrison. Lennon gifted the guitar to a friend who kept the instrument until 2004 when he sold it at auction. Sold May 2013.

26 Fender 1964 Stratocaster (Jimi Hendrix) – $388,338
Although widely expected to fetch over $1 million, this Strat previously owned by Hendrix was sold in April 2015 for only $322,272 ($388,338 with buyer’s premium). Hendrix gifted the guitar to his brother Leon after paying around $350 for it.

27 Fender 1949 Broadcaster Prototype – $375,000
This was the guitar that began the legacy of one of the most popular guitars in the world – the Fender Telecaster. Designed by Leo Fender in 1949, this guitar was eventually sold for $375’000 to a private collector in 1994.

28 Martin 1930 OM-45 Deluxe – $366,000
Only 14 of these guitars were ever produced, with only 10 being still known to exist. A modern day version of this guitar retails for around $100’000, so it isn’t too surprising to see the original sell for such a high figure! Sold April 2014.

29 Hofner 1958 Senator (John Lennon) – $337,200
This guitar was supposedly gifted to a Beatles roadie by John Lennon. Although there is no photographic evidence of Lennon ever playing the guitar, a hand-written letter from George Harrison calls it one of Lennon’s earliest guitars. Sold July 2009.

30 Gibson 1954 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty – $335,000
Once owned by Les Paul himself, some call this piece the most significant electric guitar ever made. Purchased by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay for $275’000 (or $335,000 when including the buyer’s premium). Sold February 2015.

Peter Green/Gary Moore 1959 Les Paul Standard

Many people have asked about this one.  I would love to include it on the list…but where?? It is widely accepted that this legendary guitar is one of the most (if not THE most) valuable guitars in the world. Unfortunately there is no public record of what value the guitar has previously exchanged hands for. If anyone happens to have Kirk Hammet’s phone number, feel free to ask him how much he snagged it for! 😉

In Conclusion

So what’s the takeaway from all of this? If you’re considering picking up a guitar as an investment… try and get yourself an old Fender, preferably a Stratocaster, and if possible…buy it from Eric Clapton. Job done. If that fails, something previously owned by a Beatle looks to be a safe bet as well!

Would you consider yourself a true guitar nerd? Let’s put that to the test! Do you think you can correctly identify all 17 of the signature guitars I’ve laid out below?

Some are fairly easy, some are pretty tricky. And if you manage to get the last one you can color me impressed!

How To String & Tune a Lefty Guitar

Many new players seem to become stuck at the first hurdle of guitar – how to string and tune it correctly. More specifically I get an email usually once a week asking about the correct order in which to string a lefty guitar.

I personally can’t remember what it was like being a fledgling lefty guitarist so I shan’t jest!  Not to your faces anyway…

If you have a bona fide lefty guitar then you will find that the nut will only accept the strings if you place them in the correct order.  By this I mean that the slots in the nut are designed to snugly fit each string, so if you tried to place the thickest string in the slot designed for the thinnest string there would be insufficient space.

Some beginner southpaw players will take a regular right handed guitar and simply hold it left handed, without adjusting the string order. Although this is a perfectly viable way to play (see Eric Gales), it isn’t recommended as there is next to no instructional material out there for this style of play.  You’ll pretty much be on your own when it comes to learning.

If you aspire to possibly become a guitar teacher you’re also going to really struggle to find students if you don’t learn to play in standard tuning! Do yourself a favor and string your guitar in the fashion that I’ve set out below.

How To Tune a Left Handed Guitar

For both left and right handed guitars the thinnest string will be nearest to the floor (when in a playing position) and from there they will increase in thickness towards you.  On any standard tuned 6-string guitar the order of strings from thick to thin is EADGBE. Why not come up with a quick mnemonic to help you memorize the order? For example, Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie.

See below to have this information displayed in pretty colors…

How To Tune a Left Handed Guitar

How To Tune a Left Handed Bass

And what about those of you who prefer the thunderous power of a juicy bass guitar? Exactly the same as a regular guitar my friend, minus the two high strings.  So on a 4-string bass (which is what you’ve purchased, right?) you’ve got EADG from thickest to thinnest. Easy!

How to Tune a Left Handed Bass GuitarHope that cleared things up!  By the way, how badly do you want a multi-colored set of strings now!?

Tuners

Now you just need yourself a good tuner to make sure you’re pitch perfect. I highly recommend a good headstock tuner such as an inexpensive Snark or NS Micro. These handy little guys clip on to your guitar’s headstock and tune (extremely accurately!) via vibration. You’ll spot an older model of Snark tuner in the photo of my guitar at the top of this page.

Although you can be cheap and use a free online option, your ear likely isn’t good enough yet. Grab one $10 tuner and it’ll serve you for life.

Left Handed Fender American Elite Series Strat Maple

Here’s what Fender Has To Say

An innovative instrument melding traditional style with modern sound and features, the American Elite Stratocaster Left-Handed is a progressive guitar for 21st-century musicians. Designed for players who push the envelope every night, this guitar is a true performer that leaves others in the dust with eye-catching style, exceptional feel and versatile sound from the very first moment you plug it in and play.

Featured on all American Elite instruments, the new 4th generation Noiseless pickups are only available in this series. Combining vintage-style sound with effectively hum-free performance, these are the pinnacle of Fender’s noiseless pickup designs, offering pristine cleans and fat, overdriven tones that scream with pure rock ‘n’ roll power. Designed for fast playing and effortless position changes, the compound profile neck is ideal for all playing styles. A modern “C”-shape at the nut, the profile morphs along the length of the neck to a modern “D”-shaped profile at the updated neck heel, providing plenty of comfortable support for fret hand antics. Locking, all short-post tuning machines provide increased break angle at the nut for buzz-free performance. The smooth two-point modern tremolo adds emotive touches to your performance without sacrificing your tuning.

Fender is renowned for head-turning style, and this guitar is no different—from the newly refined, sleek and deeper contours that hug the player’s body to the black chrome headstock logo and large pearloid fret markers this instrument will dazzle the audience with elegant style. The American Elite Stratocaster Left-Handed is a bold new guitar for the brave new guitarist who is setting out to cross uncharted musical terrain. Includes a redesigned Elite Molded Case with TSA locks to provide increased protection for your cherished instrument.
